Central Sq. Cambridge, MA

Here's just some quick nice shots of lights in central square on an authentic wintry night Dec. 29, 2012 taken with phone
Although I love my Relay Rides!  don't say nothin bad about them!!
By the way, just for the record, I have thus far had no control on the advertising!!  I hope this creates enough plausible deniability for all concerned!!  Holy47874!  I didn't expect to see some of this silly s&^%t!

My best shot at a holiday card ever, and I mean every word I hope you enjoy reading it, as I enjoyed writing it!

To all those whom I know within the touch of my words and this card
It is my dearest hope that you are all doing well
through these daring holidays, and into the “New Year”
May it be just that for all of us who need it to be.
For all of you who helped us get through a very tough year, ( and years!, you know who you are!) my gratitude
may not even be put to words.
To all those I hold in my heart Forever,
I and my whole family, both by blood and extension,
wish you happiness, safety, and your needs fulfilled!

Therefore, in my simplest way to put it,
Happy Holidays!!! and lets be in touch  ok crazy pic of me doing a performance on the Dec. 29, 2012 at the Mobius Gallery, as moderated by Terra Freidrichs (gotta represent!)  boffo show! cheers!

My Flexible Flyer

I remember the snow
I am 11
I remember the wildness
and the quiet of the snow
and I remember
My beautiful sled
It is long,
its trim is metal
and red
I take the steel wool and
clean the rust from its slim runners
I oil the steering
it is ready
and so am I
I am on the hill
the other kids are with me
though I may not know them
we are together for the riding
I run
I throw my Flyer down and myself
upon its boards
I am speeding
I am the wind
I am
It is freedom
it is a thrill
it is so right
My Flyer comes to a turning, screeching stop
but not me, I keep going a little
the snow on my face makes me happy!
and I am ready to do it again, and again
I shiver in the cold and laugh
like a sailor on a calm northern sea
my Flexible Flyer and me

My Mother has died

My mother has died today December 7, 2012.  She was a good woman, not much of a hugger but I always felt loved by her.  She sat us down at the upright when my sister and I were growing up and played us all the old folk songs and we would sing along.  Then she would break into some Chopin, and my favorite, the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.  I can hear the old sad... yeah they were a buncha kind of dark damn songs!  There were funny ones too!  I hear them even now, "When Johnny comes marchin home again, hoorah, hoorah..."
She took us to college theatre, my sister Carla and me, seeing things like The Match Maker, The Trouble with Harry, Shakespeare, art festivals, ballet, book stores, and because of her we saw Robert Frost live and reciting his poetry near the Esplenade!  She taught us architecture, art, music, writing all the things we came to love in our own ways.  Her late x husband E. Nelson Hayes, also raised the bar, especially on the book side.  We grew up in a veritable library, books in every room in the house, and more coming everyday.  Our mom was not the happiest mom, she wasn't a saint, I guess my sister could tell some things about that, but she was a cultural bad-ass.   she was also clearly a hotty.  "She'll be comin round the mountain when she comes..."

String Theory Hookup

This is a little inter-dimensional potential romance.  The formula between them is actually part of a string theory formula, woohoo...

Vase in Candlight

Ok so I was talking to the owner of the Out of the Blue gallery and he was looking at my blog stuff and he half jokingly said to you have any vases with flowers?  Apparently that and landscapes sell!  Sad but what can you do?  Well this one's for you Tom Tipton!

More crackled surface work....

Woman in Our Time

Here I am experimenting with the surface textures to help express my feeling regarding the long trail of abuses heaped on women in our civilization.  I agree with the late Stieg Larson who characterized our society as woman hating.

A different look

Okay playing with looks for performance

Composite drawing that started with pencil and was completed with layers in Photo shop.   drawing by Alex Herwitz
This is my first published caricature of my step-dad Nelson Hayes.  I was 12 or so when I did it and it appeared on the back of the book Trackers of the Skies.  The book is edited by my step-dad and the front cover was done by my mother.  The book was about the the work of astronomers working at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory where my step-dad was Editor.   I met Carl Sagan in those days and Alan Hynek.  They all played chess together!

The Brief Tale of Carson Jones

This flintlock blunderbuss pistol, most likely of late 18th century Spanish design was purportedly the property of Zebulon Jones. Jones was a wealthy plantation owner and it is believed that the pistol had been a gift from a visiting South American businessman.

One day, a young “house” slave by the name of Carson “Jones” was cleaning in the master’s study. As was his habit he had removed the flintlock from its’ case to dust it. Carson always enjoyed cleaning the flintlock because he greatly admired the craftsmanship and the feel of the weapon in his hand. Carson knew that slaves were rarely allowed to handle weapons, but never considered his cleaning as a real infraction of the rules. Unfortunately, Mr. Zebulon Jones chose that moment to enter the room. Mr. Jones was horrified seeing his weapon in the hands of his slave, and bellowed in anger and shock. Carson was so surprised and frightened that he reflexively pulled the trigger of the pistol which was always kept loaded. The shot came nowhere near hitting Zebulon Jones, but so unnerved him that he had a heart attack and died right on the spot. Carson Jones, knowing that his life would soon be forfeit if he did not leave immediately, fled the house with weapon still in hand. Although, search parties and dogs hunted the runaway slave for several days he was clever and eluded them. Moving only along the river and backtracking frequently in the water where the dogs could not track him, he made his way slowly northward. He knew his only hope was to find the so-called “underground railway” that slaves from some of the surrounding plantations had told him about. Carson had heard of the secret meeting place for the railway. It lay some fifty miles distant, but Carson had been taught the ways of the forest by his mother who was part Indian, and he knew how to survive. Although he found the meeting spot fairly easily he was forced to wait for a long time before anyone showed up. However, two days later a party of fellow escapees did finally arrive. He later remarked that he had never felt so alone in all his life. It was a difficult and often perilous trip, but one month and nearly 1500 miles later the group passed over the border into Canada and freedom.

Meanwhile, Jones had kept the flintlock pistol with him and when he crossed over into Canada he held it once again in his hand. In his telling of this story he said that he just laughed until he cried and fell down on his knees to thank the Lord for this strange and wonderful instrument of his deliverance. and he determined to keep the weapon as a kind of good luck talisman. Though he kept this pistol as a treasured item and passed it on to his children, along with this story, the weapon was never fired again.

Mr. Carson Jones’ and family returned to the United States during the Civil War. His son, also Carson, served in Company E, 4th US Colored Infantry at Fort Lincoln.  He served with the distinction.
Transcribed this day of January 9, 1904 by Jeremiah Tilton. This story was told to me by my dear friend Carson Jones Jr. aged 75 years, on the above mentioned date in the city of Atlanta, Georgia

Story by Alexander Herwitz
This story is fictional.  Any relationship to persons living or dead is strictly coincidental.
Attached above is an actual photo of Company E.  Below is the weapon that inspired this story and was created by me from a grey plastic toy.  I used several layers of mixed media paint and painting effects to achieve what I ho
pe looks like the real thing.  I then mounted it on blue velvet.

My favorite palace/castle Neuschwanstein
Here are Christian and Ariel in a portrait I did long ago.  Chris is about 10, and Ariel 8.

dreams of Eniac

so much to share that I have held within my mind and my computer hard drives...

The Stranger in a Top Hat by Alexander herwitz

My saddest poem to date

Alone in my rooms
hole in my soul
I cannot seal the break
I need what I cannot have
I have some of what I need
Stopping starting falling rising
over my head under the water
of my decisions or incisions
Keep talking smile while walking
hand out some change
practice honesty, fealty, compassion
skill levels, fairness, objectivity
air still whistles through the hole
feeling the weight of my failures
dragging my sense of entitlement
confusion about whether I deserve what I got
feeling sorry for myself isn't helping but it will do for now

Liam and Kiera with Stanley

Wow, talk about good omens!  So here are my twins, gymnastics is a big part of their lives.  They are awesome at it!  This was a day or two after the big Bruins win.  The  B's assistant coach's Geoff Ward daughter, Kiley Ward, goes to classes here at Brestyans Gymnastics School.  The Ward family was great to bring the cup in and let everyone take hundreds of pix!  Geez I got way too many shots (like 50 or more)!  Still it was a great moment.
I did this for a contest to pick an unusual paint job for this scion.  I call it the chipcar

This is my late Uncle Ken Herwitz, Master painter, and teacher had his own studio in Marblehead and taught a lot of folks how to draw and paint for decades.

Hi folks! I am here because in the night when I am in my rooms I am lonely, and what better way to mitigate these feelings, barring get togethers with loved ones, then to express myself by writing. My band is doing well and we are in a decent position to make it fruitful. See our FB page at Division 16, or our web page d-16.org. However, I am going to post my own stuff here, which includes my artwork, my poetry, my video work and music as i go along. Oh and photographs. I hope to really get things going with this blog. Stay with me.

So, I am linking to my band's web site and hope those of you are reading this will take a moment to check it out.

Hi to all who may find themselves here. It has been a while since I posted any material (artwork, etc.) However, so much has been happening in the meantime that I intend to update as often as possible. My band Division 16 is gaining traction on the web and on the street. I have done some poetry readings here in Cambridge which was great and I want to do more. So, join me as you are able!
